This week ramps were introduced to the block area. Children have explored various ways to make ramps with different materials including cove moldings. They create hypotheses about ramps and test their theories. In making ramps, they work with steepness of the cove moldings, choose what the moldings might sit on, pick which ball might travel down their ramp, and create an area that the balls will collect.
Today, Jack and Brady worked together to build ramps which they called "100 ramps."
Brady: I'm a making a three legged ramp. Maybe a four legged one.
Jack: We need something to stop the balls from rolling.
Brady: Here! (handing Jack a block)
Jack: I think we should make it cooler! Remember when the balls rolled into the box. We need more blocks we're making it taller.
Brady: I'll put a big ramp on it.
Jack: If you roll all the balls the ramp will break.
Brady: I need something (a block). I need one of those pieces.
Jack: None of the balls fit.
Brady: They don't?
Jack: They can't fit like this.
Brady: Then. Let's just do this (moving the coved molding).
Brady: I'm going to make a 100 legged ramp.
Jack: But it will break this track.
Brady: It's ok!
Birk joins the play.
Jack: We're constructing a structure.
Brady: We're building a "100 Ramps".
Birk: Cool!
Brady: We need to build an entrance!
Brady: How is all of these going to fit into 1?
Birk: I want 100 balls to race.
Harry and Izzy join the play.
Brady: This is the race track.
Harry: How many can we race?
Brady: 100!
Harry: (Harry counts the number of ramps.) 1, 2,...7!
Brady: I added another one. Count it!
Harry: (Harry counts again.) 1, 2....8!
Brady: I added another one.
Harry: 9!
Birk: There a 9 balls!
