Book: The Gingerbread Baby Snack: goldfish & gogurt More children came over to the zoo today. Some wanted to draw for the zoo map, while others enjoyed playing in the zoo one last day! Another group worked with Susan in the studio to put the finishing touches on a circle project. Snack: Fig Newtons and Cheese Sticks Book: The Pout-Pout Fish Over the past two days, children have been drawing the different areas of the zoo. Each child chose a different area to draw. After they finished, their drawing was placed on the large bulletin board above the zoo to create a large map. It helps the children reflect on their work in the zoo and save their work from the past two months, drawings and photographs. Monday: The First Day of Work on the Map Tuesday: The Second Day of Work on the MapThe Map and The ZooSnack: raisins and crackers Book: Carol brought an accordion to share with the children. She explained that it works like their own bodies. First, Carol asked them to take a breath. Then she told them that their singing voices only work when the air from their breath goes through their vocal cords. “Without the air you couldn’t make the sounds of song” she said. When Kath joined the circle, we needed someone to tell her about the new instrument. Brady explained, ”You know how you sing or talk. The accordion makes the noise. It’s just like when you talk or sing- you need air in your body! Carol added, “Unless you bring in air, the accordion can’t make sounds.” We sang the following songs:
"Clap Your Hands" "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" "Jingle Bells" "Tingalayo" "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer" "Frosty the Snowman" "Let's Make a Snowman!" "Do the Huck-A-Buck" Snack: gogurt & wheat thins Book: Rhyming Dust Bunnies Yesterday after the children cleaned up in Dramatic Play a teacher noticed something was missing. It was the flowers that decorate the new wedding cake! Nine of these small round accessories were missing from the area. Today the teachers brought this dilemma to the children at morning meeting. Kath: We have a dilemma! That means a big problem. Nine of the flower decorations for the wedding cake are missing! Morgan: Maybe a big dino ate them. Jack: Or a tiger, or a lion. Kath: We noticed this yesterday right after clean up while you were still here. Now what should we do? Jack: I can be a detective to find them. Kath: What is a detective? Jack: He finds things. Brady: I can be his assistant! Theertha: When you find it you have to wear your shoes and look in a different place. Lauren: I know. You have to retrace your steps. Birk: Maybe we should look in the sensory table under the kinetic sand. Brady: I think I know some places to look, like under the microwave. Suzette: Maybe they are behind something. FINAL NOTE: If anyone happens to find these in pockets, or at the bottom of backpacks they can be returned with no questions asked!! Thank you!
Snack: Pirate Booty & Clementines Book: Harold and The Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson Several children expressed an interest in starting in the dramatic play area today, so Katie brought them inside to look at the space and talk about what they have played in the past and what they might like to play today. Together they set the stage and made a plan. Izzy: We want to play wedding today. Lauren: Yes, me too. Birk: I want to be the puppy at the wedding. Zoe: I think I will be the writer and I will use this clipboard to show what we will do. I will draw the cake. We will also share this cake. Katie: Are there items that you might need or does anything need to change in this area? How should we set it up so that it is ready for a wedding? Izzy: Um, well we should move chairs over for the guests. Lauren: We should put things away that we don't need, like the puppets. Izzy: We could put the extra babies away. We will only need three today. There are three girls, so three babies. Birk: We need to move the clothes rack, so people can read our signs. They say important things, like remember to be quiet. Izzy: Oh and we really need the white dress and wedding clothes back out. Birk: The puppies could wear the dog capes. Lauren: The table needs to be ready for after the party. Birk: What's a wedding without music? We need music! Zoe: I will get the table ready and the cake. Izzy: I will get the clothes. Birk that music is too sad. Can you switch it to a different song? Birk: Sure, how about this one? Izzy: Yep, that's perfect Katie presented their plan at morning meeting and then the children played wedding. Snack: Grapes and Cheez-Its Book: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do you See? Robin Foltz took photos today during swim. Look out for more photos on the school district's website. Snack: Goldfish, Banana Chips, and Bunny Gummies Book: We're Going on a Bear Hunt Today, we had two different morning meetings: one in the blue room and one in the orange room. The children were divided based on which room they would begin small group time. Smaller morning meetings gave children the opportunity to share their learning about the spaces and have conversations about the play that is happening in blocks and dramatic play. After small group time, we joined as a large group and shared learning that happened during morning meeting and small group time. Camera Katie worked with children on the Smart Board. Children used different shapes to create vehicles, animals, etc. Snack: pretzels and raisins Book: This morning in the mud kitchen, Harlow, Sigrid and Mia fired up their band while playing with natural found instruments. Mia rhythmically whipped a stick in the air so that you could hear a windy sound, while Harlow beat a stump with bark chunks and Sigrid swished tall grass up and down. They rotated instruments before they began teaching other children. As an audience member, one had to listen closely to hear some of the soft subtle sounds that they made, until the metal spoon came over and hand clapping began. Wow! What a creative band!
